A QMC approach for high dimensional Fokker-Planck equations modelling polymeric liquids

چکیده
A classical model used in the study of dynamics of polymeric liquids is the beadspring chain representation of polymer molecules. The chain typically consists of a large number of beads and thus the state space V of its configuration, which is essentially the position of all the constituent beads, turns out to be high dimensional. The distribution function governing the configuration of a bead-spring chain undergoing shear flow is a Fokker-Planck equation on V. In this article, we present QMC methods for the approximate solution of the Fokker-Planck equation which are based on the time splitting technique to treat convection and diffusion separately. Convection is carried out by moving the particles along the characteristics and we apply the algorithms presented in [1] for diffusion. Altogether, we find that some of the QMC methods show reduced variance and thus slightly outperform standard MC.

We consider a mathematical model for polymeric liquids which requires the solution of high-dimensional Fokker-Planck equations related to stochastic differential equations. While Monte-Carlo (MC) methods are classically used to construct approximate solutions in this context, we consider an approach based on QuasiMonte-Carlo (QMC) approximations. Although QMC has proved to be superior to MC in ...

متن کاملA Heterogeneous Alternating-direction Method for a Micro-macro Dilute Polymeric Fluid Model
We examine a heterogeneous alternating-direction method for the approximate solution of the FENE Fokker–Planck equation from polymer fluid dynamics and we use this method to solve a coupled (macro-micro) Navier–Stokes–Fokker–Planck system for dilute polymeric fluids. In this context the Fokker–Planck equation is posed on a high-dimensional domain and is therefore challenging from a computationa...
متن کاملFinite Element Methods for Deterministic Simulation of Polymeric Fluids
In this work we consider a nite element approach to solving the coupled Navier Stokes (NS) and Fokker Planck (FP) multiscale model that describes the dynamics of dilute polymeric uids. Deterministic approaches such as ours have not received much attention in the literature because they present a formidable computational challenge due to the fact that the analytical solution of the Fokker Planck...
متن کاملExistence of Global Weak Solutions to Coupled Navier–stokes–fokker–planck Systems: a Brief Survey
We present a brief survey of recent results concerning the existence of global-in-time weak solutions in a bounded Lipschitz domain in R, d ∈ {2, 3}, to a class of kinetic models for dilute polymeric liquids with noninteracting polymer chains. The mathematical model is a coupled Navier–Stokes–Fokker–Planck system. The velocity and the pressure of the fluid satisfy a Navier–Stokes-like system of...
